On Friday June 3rd the school hosted a party for alumni to celebrate 60 years at our Bexley site.
We welcomed back about eighty students and their partners from different decades, and our two guest speakers were Robert Horton, class of 1975, and Ananthan Ambikairajah class of 2011.
When Sydney Technical High School was first established in 1911, the school shared premises with TAFE at the Ultimo site. Despite many requests from Tech Principals to the government, asking that the school be given a purpose built site in the city, the school was temporarily moved to premises at Albion Street Paddington. This site now belongs to the University of NSW. It was not until November 1955 that the then Minister for Education R. J. Heffron laid the foundation stone for the new school site at Bexley. The purpose built buildings were completed in 1956. Of note was the 1000 seater auditorium with the sloping floor. http://www.sths.nsw.edu.au/about-sths/school-history
Robert Horton our first guest speaker is a senior partner in Hicksons lawyers, and specialises in insurance law. He has expertise in discrimination law with particular reference to educational issues. He spoke about the threats of digital disruption to the legal profession, and how big data will impact on how case law is regarded. Robert assured us however that intellectual judgement and the ability to interpret the law will still be required in the coming decades , and that students should not be dissuaded from law study if that is where their interests lie.
Our second speaker Ananthan has a degree in Neuroscience from the University of New South Wales, and is currently completing a Masters of Education, teaching Biology and Chemistry. Ananthan was always interested in standup comedy, and was always in the SRC Talent Quest. He has the gift of making others laugh. Ananthan spoke about his school days with the indomitable Mr Dando, past Deputy Principal of the school, who retired in 2011, and his legendary Personal Development lessons.
