Swimming Carnival

The Angelo Anestis Aquatic Centre – Bexley hosted the annual Sydney Tech swimming carnival.  Under blue skies we had the best attended carnival this century according to Mr Grinham, and it was a chance for our swimmers to showcase their talent early in the season.  The SRC had students dress in house colours and this added a lot of fun to the event. Congratulations to Eugene Waetford who broke the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:25.00 and Russel Koh the 50m Freestyle record with a time of 26.03.  Thanks to all staff for the smooth running of the carnival.

The Board of Studies has a program to help students with practical support in their Higher School Certificate examinations. This practical support, known as provisions, assists students to read examination questions and to write their answers. Provisions include rest breaks and extra time. The use of any provision is not written on the student’s results.

Swans Visit

On Tuesday 6 February two players from the Sydney Swans, Heath Grundy and Gary Rohan, came to visit the school.  In the morning, they took Year 8 for a practical instruction lesson as part of the AFL component of PDHPE.  However from 11.30 onwards they gave the Year 11 and Year 12 PDHPE classes a lecture and subsequently a Q and A.  Year 11 and 12 took this opportunity to gain an insight into sports medicine rehabilitation procedures, specialised training programs designed to improve both individual and team performance, and the interaction between skeletal and muscular body systems.  Core points of enquiry included the ethical use of local anaesthetic and the impact this has on the rehabilitation process and the concussion policy of the AFL which, over recent years, has been surrounded by controversy.  Year 11 and 12 students were afforded valuable examples which were extremely relevant to their studies of Senior PDHPE which will undoubtedly be beneficial for use in the HSC exam.

Jordan Ka Truong was awarded a 2017 Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement on Wednesday 13 September in the William Wilkins Gallery, NSW Department of Education at Bridge Street, Sydney.  The award recognises outstanding Year 12 students who have excelled in their secondary years across academic excellence, sporting, cultural, community and leadership.

Jordan is a gifted and insightful mathematician who has been recognised for his outstanding abilities through multiple prizes and prestigious awards.   He has won multiple awards in the Australian Mathematics Competition and in 2015 he obtained a high distinction in the Intermediate Australian Mathematical Olympiad and was invited to go on the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee senior contest.  Jordan is also a keen participant in the Australian Science Olympiads.

Elected as a senior prefect, Jordan has established the STEM program, mentoring and helping students.  Leadership of the group has enhanced Jordan’s organisational and negotiating skills and further developed his leadership ability.  Jordan is committed to his volunteer work and outside school he is a keen participant in Taekwondo and has achieved Bo Dan.

Jordan is a worthy recipient of this award and is pictured below with his parents and the Minister.

It has to be noted that the Awards Ceremony is the last to be held in the beautiful Department of Education’s William Wilkins Gallery.  The building was constructed over many years and construction started in 1912.
